作者说:Unfortunately, government 在tempts to improve education are stripping the joy out of teaching 和 doing nothing to help children. The Common Core standards require teachers to march lockstep in arming students with "21st-century skills."

I say: Well, yes, politicians are making laws that impact our teaching. But, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are better than what we used to have: each state with their own standards 和 no way to compare progress state-to-state. So I say, that's a win.

作者说, "My most important 贡献 to students are not addressed by the Common Core, Smarter Balance 和 teacher evaluations. I come in early, work through lunch 和 stay late to help children who ask for assistance but clearly crave the 在tention of a caring adult."

There isn't a test or evaluation that is going to tell me that. It all lies in trust 和 the relationship I have with my boss. I have been lucky to work for *amazing* 管理员istrators. And...if the day came that I didn't feel that way, it would be time to move on. Bottom line: Our principals are well aware of all the great things we bring to their school, 和 there isn't any test or evaluation document that would change their mind.

作者说, "Until this year, I was a highly regarded 认证的 teacher. Now, I must prove myself with data that holds little meaning to me. I no longer have the luxury of teaching 文学, with all of its life lessons, or teaching writing to students who long to be creative."

这不是第一年 standardized testing, 和 that data is just one piece of the puzzle! Remember 我什么 said about trust from your 管理员? Same thing applies 这里.

There is a science to how we implement instruction. There are certain things we can do as educators to enhance our lessons: State objectives, define key 词汇, have kids work in cooperative structures to equalize participation 和 build language among ELL students. We can give 评定s to measure how well we did 和 then go back 和 reteach or enrich based on what the data says.

没有人告诉我每天早上带学校去耶稣的家 Resource Officer 和 pick him up because he couldn't read 和 didn't like school. No one told me buy supplies for the girl who couldn't afford them or show up to soccer games 和 talk to the families of the kids I teach. No one taught me those things 和 no test measures it - that is the art of teaching.

Teaching is, in fact, both an art 和 science.

Or met awesome kids who make me laugh 和 teach me patience (among other things) every day:

或找到我最喜欢的书(给予者) 和 shared it with multiple groups of kids:

  1. I think your pictures say it all. Students are still 在 the heart of what we do 和 if we continue to listen to what they are saying, we will know what we need to teach next. A standard is a framework...or a guide. We teach individuals 和 move them forward in their knowledge.

    1. 您're so right about starting with the kids. Yetta Goodman was one of the 研究ers I read a lot of in grad school 和 she called herself a 'kidwatcher' 和 it'如此真实....

一世'm 目前 in school for Middle Grades Education, 和 it always frustrates me when people tell me to "pick another career"因为所有政府的变动。

  5. Thanks for responding to this 文章. I also wanted to comment about this 文章 when I saw it on Facebook. I agree with your 反射 和 often say the same thing about teaching that you mentioned 在 the end... most people feel they are an expert on public education because they 在tended public school. Thanks for reminding everyone that being an educator is a profession, career, passion, 和 talent. :)
